How to enable GZIP Compression

What is Gzip Compression?

Gzip compression is a method used to reduce the file size of web pages, CSS files, and JavaScript files before they are sent from the server to the client's browser. Enabling Gzip compression can significantly improve website performance, speed up page load times, and reduce bandwidth usage.

Enabling Gzip Compression in cPanel

  1. Login to your cPanel account.
  2. Scroll down to the "Software" section and click on "Optimize Website".
  3. In the "Optimize Website" page, you will see a "Compress All Content" section. You can choose one of the following options:

Disabled

By default, the Gzip compression option is set to "Disabled". This means that Gzip compression is not enabled for your website. Select this option if you want to disable Gzip compression.

Compress All Content

Selecting the "Compress All Content" option will enable Gzip compression for all types of content including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML files. This is the recommended option to achieve the maximum benefit of Gzip compression.

Compress the specified MIME types

If you want to enable Gzip compression for specific MIME types only, select this option. You can enter the MIME types you want to compress in the "MIME Types" field. Separate multiple MIME types with a space or comma.

Important Considerations

  • Enabling Gzip compression will consume some server resources, although the impact is usually negligible.
  • You should ensure that your web server has mod_deflate or mod_gzip enabled for Gzip compression to work. Most modern servers have this module enabled by default.
  • After enabling Gzip compression, remember to test your website to ensure that it is working correctly. Sometimes, certain files may not compress well or cause issues with certain browser versions.
  • If you are using a content delivery network (CDN), check if they are already compressing the content. Enabling Gzip compression in cPanel may conflict with the CDN's compression settings.
