How do I enable SSH access for my hosting account?
SSH or Secure Shell is a network communication protocol that enables two computers to communicate and share data.
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a file protocol for transferring large files over the web. It builds on the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and includes Secure Shell (SSH) security components.
If you're wanting to transfer files between your local desktop and the server it's recommended to use SFTP as it's much more secure than standard FTP.
Access to SSH, MySQL, and SFTP is blocked publicly by default for added security. After you whitelist your IP Address for remote access, you'll be able to connect to those services accordingly.
You can also access the command line directly via cPanel under Terminal.
To enable SSH access and whitelist your IP Address, follow the steps below:
- Log into your Clickhost dashboard at https://clickhost.com.au/manage
- Click Web Hosting, in the menu to the left
- Click Manage next to your service on the right
- Click the SSH Access in the new web hosting management menu to the left of the page.
- Enter your IP address into the box and then click Allow IP Address.
You will now be able to connect to SSH or SFTP using port 6000 using the server name as the host which you can find on the overview page here:
